History

Excelsior Lumber Company wasn’t a lumber company at all when it was originally founded in 1880. It began as a wood wool manufacturer producing a fine grade of excelsior, a material used exclusively in mattresses. In 1880, Benjamin B. Demarest purchased two swathes of land on the bank of the Pequannock River in Butler, New Jersey—about one mile upstream from the Butler railroad station. Here, he built the Excelsior Factory, producing all kinds of white and red excelsior from poplar, spruce, basswood, butternut, willow, and white pine woods. The company was purchased by Walter K. Wildes and Guy C. Cleveland in 1912, and the factory was incorporated as the North Jersey Excelsior Company. The mill sadly burned down three short years later in 1915.

In 1922, the North Jersey Excelsior Company sold its land to Leo Lust, who established the Excelsior Lumber Company. The first sawmill was erected in 1926, and by 1930, in the midst of the depression, a lumber and building material yard was opened alongside the Butler train tracks, receiving large shipments off the trains right into the yard. At this time, a first-class mill and shop were also opened, owned and operated by Lust and his son, John Lust.

In 1971, John Lust sold Excelsior Lumber Company to Gerry Meany. After operating as a mill, hardware store, and lumber yard for more than 45 years, the store burned down in the mid-1980s. The business operated out of trailers as the shop was reconstructed. In 1989, Bob Kaslander Sr. and his son Bob Kaslander Jr. purchased Excelsior Lumber, discontinued millwork, and rebuilt the store to what it is today.

Now, the Excelsior Lumber Company operates as one of the region’s premier lumber yard, hardware store, and outdoor living center. In 2004, the company expanded its footprint to include a successful kitchen and bath design showroom as yet another way to assist and inspire its customers.
